Every April we celebrate poetry and poets with National Poetry Month. Started in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, the month is meant to increase awareness of the art form, encourage more people to read poetry, and recognize our nation’s poets.

Many libraries and organizations around the country hold various events in celebration, including readings, contests and discussions. The Academy of American Poets has a great resource listing events from around the country at Poets.org.
