Take a look at this vintage ad taken from Life Magazine, July 25, 1969, extolling the benefits of sugar.

When’s your “Fat Time” and what, exactly is your “appestat”?

Eat a candy bar before dinner to reduce your appetite! Er… appestat! 
Sugar… only 18 calories per teaspoon, AND IT’S ALL ENERGY!
I’m not sure if you can see the fine print, but it’s not a disclaimer like we’d see today, or a reference to a scientific study; it’s a passage from Webster’s Dictionary defining “appestat”. 

Yes. I need serious help with my diet and sugar is just the thing to do it!
Sugar… It’s what’s for dinner!
